A section of George’s Restaurant in the Johnson Center will be designated as a faculty lounge on George Mason’s Fairfax Campus, thanks to the combined efforts of a Faculty Senate task force and University Services. It opens at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Thereafter, the lounge will be open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Free coffee, tea, and pastries provided by Sodexho will be offered until 11:30 a.m. each morning. Susan Trencher, Sociology and Anthropology, headed the task force that secured the location and made arrangements for partitions and furniture for the lounge area. Maurice Scherrens, senior vice president, and Chris Chisler, director of University Services, also facilitated the arrangements. A portion of the funding was provided by the Office of the Provost.
The site was selected because of its central location on campus, Trencher says. The purpose of the lounge is to foster casual interaction among faculty members. “It’s important to increase the faculty’s opportunities for fortuitous meetings and unstructured conversation. It builds a better community overall,” she explains.
