The Harris Theatre hosts the Dance Company’s Fall Concert tomorrow at 8 p.m., Friday at 2 p.m., and Saturday at 8 p.m. The concert features the original work of eight choreographers, including fall guest artist Claire Porter, and faculty chair of the Dance Department, Buffy Price. A score by Virgil Thompson provides an audio backdrop to Porter’s Stories Going By, which she describes as “capturing a moment, passing by a moment, loving the moment.”
Porter is internationally recognized for incorporating various theatrical elements and humor in performances. As a modern dance performance artist, and with her company Portables, she is the recipient of choreography fellowships, specifically from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and commissions for Art Matters and DTW’s First Light Project. As the fall 2003 guest for George Mason’s dance program, Porter created Stories Going By for 11 dancers.
In addition to Porter and Price’s contributions, the Fall Concert features the choreography of dance majors Katie Gallagher, Theresa Wetzel, Stephanie Wong, Michelle Funderburk, Heather Robertson, and Sarah Vorce, the work of 36 performers, and a wide range of dances, effects such as video projections on moving bodies, and dancers responding to minimalist music.
The dance company is comprised of Mason students who, with the assistance of faculty and outside professionals, seek to develop strong dance technique while performing in the Center for the Arts’s state-of-the-art facilities.
