The women’s soccer team had a highly successful conclusion to the regular season at home last week with a tie against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) leader Hofstra University and a victory over Drexel University to earn the No. 6 seed in the CAA Tournament. The win over Drexel ended a six-game winless streak for George Mason, and the Patriots improved to 8-6-5 overall, 3-3-3 in the CAA.
George Mason gained the final CAA Tournament berth and will travel to No. 3 seed University of Delaware (10-5-3, 5-2-2 CAA) today for a 3 p.m. contest, and the winner will advance to Hempstead, N.Y., to meet No. 2 seed Virginia Commonwealth University (10-5-3, 5-1-3 CAA) in a semifinal contest Friday at 5 p.m. The other first-round match-up features No. 4 College of William and Mary (11-6-2, 5-3-1 CAA) hosting fifth-seeded James Madison University (7-9-3, 5-3-1 CAA) today, with that winner meeting top-seeded and tournament host Hofstra (13-2-3, 6-1-2 CAA) Friday at 7:30 p.m. The championship game, carrying with it the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA College Cup, is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Patriots will be making their ninth consecutive appearance in the CAA Tournament, having qualified each year the event has been held. George Mason has a 9-8 record in the tournament and has advanced to the championship game four times (1996-97, 2000, 2002), but has not won the title. Mason tied Delaware, 0-0 in double overtime, in Newark on Oct. 24 and holds a 2-0-1 advantage in the all-time series.
