George Mason’s men’s basketball team is ranked 13th in the Preseason Mid-Major Top 25 poll released by CollegeInsider.com, a web site devoted to the promotion of mid-major conferences and schools.
The Patriots, winners of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title in 1989, 1999, and 2001 and postseason participants in three of the last five years, finished 16-12 overall last season while going 11-7 in league play. Mason, which returns seven lettermen and three starters from last year’s squad, will be complemented by the addition of six newcomers, adding to the Patriots’ depth.
Head Coach Jim Larranaga, who sports a 100-74 record after six years on the job, is one of 30 head and assistant coaches across the country involved in the production of the poll, which features teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Continent, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Sun Belt, and West Coast.
George Mason heads the list of CAA schools ranked in the top 25. The University of North Carolina, Wilmington, the two-time defending CAA champion, fell in at No. 23 overall. The Patriots were also picked to finish first in a CAA preseason coaches poll after earning seven first-place votes.
The Patriots open their 2003-04 season on Friday, Nov. 21, at home against Morehead State Univesity at 7 p.m. An exhibition game is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. against the One-On-One All Stars.
