In an effort to provide greater transparency and accountability at all levels, President Alan Merten recently announced the university has launched a new web page on the Office of Institutional Research and Reporting (IRR) web site that lists critical statistics for each George Mason academic unit and the university as a whole, showing trends for the past four years.
The university’s summary includes an overview and trends for student enrollment, staff employment, and financial information, as well as student-faculty, instructional cost, and research expenditure ratios. Currently, data for the university and each college and school cover the years 1999 through 2002. The site will be updated three times annually as fall enrollment data, fiscal year data, and academic year data become available.
For the first time, information such as the income generated and expended by each unit, as well as each unit’s overall enrollment, the annual number of graduates, staff employment, and enrollment trends in individual programs, is available to everyone in the university, although access is restricted to campus users.
Developed at the request of the Board of Visitors, the web site was produced in record time–less than four months–according to Meihua Zhai, IRR director. The data were collected primarily by IRR, the Budget Office, and the Office of Enrollment Planning/Summer Term, with individual units contributing the narrative that provides an overall description, future directions, and issues facing their units. Zhai says an informal poll of her peers at other institutions indicates that George Mason’s is the first web site of this kind.
