Editor’s Note: The following is a message from President Alan Merten for the George Mason community regarding the reappointment of Provost Peter Stearns.
I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Peter Stearns for five additional years as provost of George Mason University. The reappointment will be effective July 1, 2004.
Since he began his tenure at the university in January 2000, Provost Stearns has been an outstanding leader of our academic programs and activities and has influenced many important initiatives throughout the university community. He has overseen the development and implementation of the new General Education Program, as well as promoting policies that have resulted in the addition of new innovative degree programs. He fostered policies and plans that have both improved student quality at all levels and enhanced our research activities and output. He promotes strong contacts with students through his own teaching and activities such as the President-Provost Student Advisory Committee. He continues to be a very productive scholar and an international academic leader.
Provost Stearns has been particularly active in clarifying institutional policies and procedures of importance to the faculty such as tenure and appointment status. He has worked to increase research opportunities for all faculty members and has improved awareness of diversity issues in faculty recruitment. He has implemented a finely balanced standard for teaching excellence and research in the tenure process.
While continuing to enhance the traditional strengths of the university, Dr. Stearns has stimulated the addition of new science initiatives and focused attention on international research and education. He helped to further define and implement the distributed campus plan, with particular attention to Prince William.
Dr. Stearns has infused the university community with a sense of excitement and opportunity, promoting both academic excellence and entrepreneurship. We look forward to another five years of outstanding leadership and stewardship from him.
