Mason is holding its third annual family weekend Friday and Saturday. The tradition invites families of new students to get to know the campus and the facilities that Mason has to offer. Families will be encouraged to expand their involvement with the university and will be offered a close-up view of the student’s educational experience.

The weekend will include open houses for Mason’s academic schools and colleges, and several departments will hold presentations and have interactive demonstrations tomorrow. Sports will also be a highlight of the weekend with a women’s volleyball game against the University of Delaware at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the P.E. Building. Following the game, the university will invite families to the Midnight Madness festivities including a pre-party starting at 8 p.m. in President’s Park. A march from Eisenhower Hall through campus to the Patriot Center will begin at 10:15 p.m.

On Saturday, families will be invited for a morning walk at 8:30 a.m. at the Field House where they will trek from the Fairfax Campus to Fairfax City and back. The president’s brunch will be held at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall at 11:30 a.m. Families will be able to mingle with President Alan and Mrs. Sally Merten as well as Provost Peter Stearns and the academic deans and directors. Saturday also includes a cardboard boat race in the Aquatic and Fitness Center at 2:30 p.m., with various teams competing on a 25-yard course. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mason will hold Roctoberfest featuring a chili cook-off and live music. The evening will conclude with a show by the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall.
