The Old Town Hall Lecture Series, cosponsored by George Mason, the City of Fairfax, and the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce Technology Committee, hosts T. Andrew Finn, professor of communication, at its lecture tonight at 7:30 p.m. Finn will discuss urban legends and virus hoaxes, which have become a concern for many.
Some of these hoaxes are e-mails with attempts to fool the recipient into passing on messages with false claims to others, cultivating more people to believe in these false statements. The talk will focus on the specific categories of virus hoaxes and urban legends and will leave the audience with ways to identify phony warnings and appeals.
The lecture is held on the second floor of Old Town Hall, at the corner of University Drive and Main Street in the City of Fairfax. It is free and open to the public, and refreshments are provided. Free parking is available in the lot on the corner of University Drive and North Street. For more information, call Traci Claar at (703) 993-8846.
