The George Mason women’s soccer team has been selected to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) for the upcoming 2003 season. A preseason poll was conducted through voting by the CAA’s 10 head coaches, who were not allowed to rank their own teams.
Perennial CAA power College of William and Mary, which has made 11 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament, received six first-place votes to be ranked at the top of the survey. Hofstra University was just ahead of George Mason in fourth place.
The George Mason women return 14 letterwinners from a team that finished 10-11 overall and 7-2 in the CAA last season. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin, a second-team All-CAA selection last season and a first-team pick as a freshman in 2000 (she missed the 2001 season with an injury), leads the returning players and is joined as a 2003 captain by senior defender Cara Patton and junior midfielder Allison Cowan. Other key returnees include seniors midfielder Becky Ragard and defenders Pamela Kent and Jennifer Orr, junior forward Sarah Wilkinson (a first-team All-CAA choice in 2001), and sophomore midfielders Amy Alecci and Amy Sorenson.
Ten newcomers join the Patriots this season as they face a schedule that includes four teams that participated in the 2002 NCAA Women’s College Cup tournament. Three of those teams will visit George Mason Stadium as part of the Patriots’ 11-game home slate.
