The 2003 soccer season has gotten off to a good start for George Mason junior John O’Hara: He was honored as Goalkeeper of the Year and selected to the all-league team in the Premier Development League (PDL).
The PDL has been in existence since 1996, and it recently became a purely amateur league to help develop high school and college players during the summer months. It consists of 51 teams across the United States and operates under the umbrella of the United Soccer Leagues.
O’Hara helped lead the Richmond Kickers Future team to the PDL Eastern Conference regular season championship with a 13-2-1 record. He also earned All-Eastern Conference honors as he led the PDL with a 0.57 goals-against average and tied for the league lead with seven shutouts. In 12 games played, O’Hara allowed just seven goals and posted nine wins.
“John is one of the top young college keepers in the nation,” says head coach Fran O’Leary, who enters his third year with the Patriots and 15th overall as a head coach. “His work ethic and dedication are second to none. I’m certain a bright future awaits him at the professional level upon completion of his college days.”
At George Mason in 2002, O’Hara was ranked nationally for goals-against average for much of the season, topping out at No. 5 on Sept. 24. A first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and All-Virginia selection, O’Hara also earned All-South Atlantic Region second-team honors last season. He has played all but 10 minutes of each of the 37 games he has appeared in as a Patriot.
George Mason opens its 2003 season Aug. 29 against Charlotte at the James Madison University/Comfort Inn Invitational in Harrisonburg. The Patriots return nine letterwinners from the team that posted an 8-7-4 overall record and a 3-4-2 mark in the CAA last year. They open their 11-game home schedule Sept. 5-7 as they host Appalachian State and Georgia Southern in the George Mason/Comfort Inn Soccer Classic at George Mason Stadium.
