“The Nation’s Health: Action through Public Policy” is the theme of the 11th Washington Health Policy Institute, June 2-6 at the Arlington Campus’ Mercatus Center. The conference is sponsored by the Center for Health Policy, Research, and Ethics in the College of Nursing and Health Science (CNHS).
The institute provides an opportunity for professionals interested in health policy to interact with a wide range of high-level players in the health policymaking process. The program offers a state-of-the-art overview of the health policy process, the players, and current and emerging health policy issues.
“Mason’s Health Policy Institute gives participants both a broad stroke picture and an understanding of current health policy issues being debated both here in Washington, D.C., and in their state capitals,” says Nancy Sharp, institute director. “Participants, as very mature and experienced health care professionals, are invigorated by this weeklong institute and return to their home states with a new level of comfort for participating here in the policymaking process. They become enthusiastically engaged in the process and return home with a clearer vision of how they can make a difference in the future of our health care system.”
Featured speakers at this year’s conference include James Gilmore, former Virginia governor; Lawrence Gostin, director, Center for Law and the Public’s Health, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities, and professor of law, Georgetown University; Ken Alibek, executive director of George Mason’s Center for Biodefense; and P.J. Maddox, CNHS dean.
“The Health Policy Institute has been breaking new ground in offering nurses and working health professionals a state-of-the-art immersion program in public health policy issues and processes since its inception,” says Maddox. “Under Nancy Sharp’s leadership, this year is no exception.”
