Prince William Campus walkers are looking for teammates to join them in the annual March of Dimes WalkAmerica on Sunday, May 4. The six-mile walk winds through the streets of Old Town Manassas. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the walk begins at 9 a.m. at the Loy E. Harris Pavilion on Center Street.

This is the first year the campus has participated in the event, according to team leaders Molly Hastedt, Prince William Administration; Mike Nuremburg, Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center; and Diane Skwisz, Student Health Services. All members of the George Mason community, as well as their families and friends, are invited to participate.

“This worthy cause brings the faculty, staff, and students at the Prince William Campus together with local residents, businesses, and other groups to support a nonprofit organization,” Hastedt says. “Once again, the campus is working with its neighbors to make a difference in the community.”

Team leaders and other campus supporters are leading the fundraising efforts, and walkers may solicit their own pledges or simply walk with the team. Coin jars for donations are located at the information desks in Prince William 1, Prince William 2, and the Freedom Center. A Marathon Day is planned for tomorrow from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. in the lobbies of Prince William 1 and the Freedom Center to recruit walkers and encourage donations.

This year’s event includes a cheerleading contest and a children’s activity area with face painting, miniature golf, and a beanbag toss. Refreshments will be found along the course, and those who prefer to walk a distance shorter than six miles can catch a van to the finish line at any time.

The March of Dimes supports research and programs to save babies from premature birth and other health threats, which affect more than 460,000 babies in the United States each year. Additional information about the organization is available online.
