Track and Field Teams Successful in Arizona Opener

The men’s and women’s track and field teams successfully opened their outdoor track and field season at Arizona State’s Baldy Castillo Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe over the weekend. The women’s team had athletes qualify in three events for the first-ever NCAA East Regional Championships that will be held at George Mason from May 30-31.
Freshman Alyce Williams, an NCAA provisional qualifier during the indoor season, qualified for the Regional Championships in the triple jump with a 41-foot, 73/4-inch mark to start the season with a win. Williams also led the Patriots in the sprints, finishing runner-up in the 200 meters in 24.25 seconds and fifth in the 100 meters in 12.04 seconds.
Sophomore Sheena Davidson picked up a win in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.11 to qualify for the Regional Championships. Also qualifying was the women’s 4×100-meter relay that placed third in 45.74 seconds.
Senior sprinter Serge Bengono led the men’s team with a win in the 100 meters in 10.67 seconds. He also placed fourth in the 200 meters in 21.56 seconds. Also winning was the men’s 4×400-meter relay in 3:11.70.
