The George Mason community is invited to attend a lecture-demonstration sponsored by the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Embassy of Japan as part of the 2003 Cherry Blossom Festival. Mannojo Nomura, an award winning Japanese playwright, director, and producer, will talk about Japanese dance style of Dai-dengaku today from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. in Harris Theatre.
In the Middle Ages in Kyoto, there was a now extinct performing art known as Dengaku or “field fun.” A new and lively original production of Dai-dengaku or “big field fun” has incorporated traditional arts and music from all over Japan as well as Western music and dance. Professional Japanese dancers will be onstage with Nomura to demonstrate Dai-dengaku with large flowered umbrellas and drums, in addition to performing acrobatics, juggling, and plate spinning.
