Rita Donahue, a 2002 graduate of George Mason with a B.F.A. in Dance and a B.A. in English, has joined the Mark Morris Dance Group. Donahue, whose family lives in Vienna, is also a graduate of Paul VI Catholic High School.
“I couldn’t be more pleased for Rita to have this opportunity to work with Mark,” says Dan Joyce, assistant professor in the Dance Department and a 10-year veteran of the Mark Morris Dance Group. “Hearing that someone I’ve worked with is now starting her career in the company is almost better than when I was selected to do it myself. Her success is a testament not only to our work in Mason’s Dance Department, but also to her own talent, intelligence, and perseverance.”
Formed in 1980, the Mark Morris Dance Group is universally recognized as one of the most innovative and talented ensembles performing today. Morris, whose creations include the Emmy winning Falling Down Stairs with superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and his comical Nutcracker–The Hard Nut, remains committed to music as an integral part of his creative process. Equally committed to education, Morris opened the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2001. This 30,000-square-foot facility features three studios and a school providing classes to more than 400 students of all ages.
