The George Mason men’s basketball team will be looking for its third Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship crown and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament bid when it travels to the Richmond Coliseum for the 2003 Pioneer CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, today through Monday. The Patriots, 16-11 overall and 11-5 in the CAA, clinched the No. 4 seed and will play their first game against the University of Delaware at 2:30 p.m.
If George Mason is victorious, the team could face No. 1 seed University of North Carolina at Wilmington in the second round on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Patriots swept the season series with Delaware this year, winning 77-67 at the Patriot Center and 71-63 on the road.
For the 14th consecutive year, the Richmond Coliseum will host the CAA Championships for the three-day event. ESPN2 will televise the championship game on Monday for the sixth consecutive season. The 2003 champion will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Patriots won the CAA title in 2001 and received an invitation to the National Invitation Tournament last season.
