Christy Smith, a former Team Development Course facilitator and summer camp counselor for George Mason’s Hemlock Overlook Center for Outdoor Education, will be a contestant on this season’s CBS TV show Survivor. The reality-based show has 16 strangers stranded in the Amazon of Brazil. Smith, who is deaf (she can hear minimal sounds, but relies on lip-reading), learned some of her team building and group facilitation skills at Hemlock Overlook.
Smith’s goal for being on the show is to help viewers understand and appreciate the abilities of deaf people to engage in adventurous and challenging activities. See the 90-minute season premiere tonight at 8 p.m.
