Andrew Finn, professor in the Communication Department, will present “Using Learning Teams to Engage Students with Course Content–and Each Other” on Friday, Jan. 31, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the in the Johnson Center, Assembly Room A. The session is first in a series of 2003 Faculty Showcases on using technology to enhance education sponsored by the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Instructional Resource Center.
Faculty teaching large-enrollment classes, from disciplines such as sociology, psychology, management, and English, can see how Finn uses learning teams. He divides his class of 240 students into teams of 6 students each. This comprehensive team-based pedagogy facilitates cooperation within teams and competition between teams in the classroom.
Finn will show video clips of a team quiz and detail how this and other components of Larry Michaelsen’s Learning Teams pedagogy can be used to engage students in a large classroom.
