George Mason’s Heinen Named CAA Player of the Week

George Mason junior Raoul Heinen has been named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) men’s basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 8. The award is the first-ever honor from the CAA for Heinen, who turned in a great all-around week, averaging 14.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.3 steals in the Patriots’ three victories.
The 6-5 point guard was red-hot from the field, shooting 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the floor, including 9-of-12 (.750) from 3-point range. In the Patriots’ 79-72 win over Duquesne, Heinen connected on 5-of-5 field goals, including two 3-pointers, and recorded a season-high 4 steals. He had a season-best 5 assists and a career-high 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting in Mason’s 68-45 triumph at Coppin State. Then, he contributed 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting (4-for-6 from 3-point range), and corralled a season-high 6 rebounds in the Patriots’ victory against Niagara.
Heinen has started every game this season, averaging 34.2 minutes per contest, and is second on the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game and in field goal percentage at 62.8 percent. He leads the team in free throw (.769) and 3-point shooting (.647) percentages, and is tied for the team lead in steals, averaging 2.0 per game.
George Mason (3-3) has won three consecutive games after opening the season with three straight losses. The Patriots will be in action again Thursday, Dec. 19, at East Carolina at 7 p.m.
