George Mason goalkeepers senior Naomi Hines and sophomore John O’Hara have each been honored with inclusion on their respective all-region soccer teams. Each team was selected by voting through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Hines was selected to the women’s All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team, while O’Hara was a second-team choice for the men’s All-South Atlantic Region squad. The honor is the first for each within their respective region.
Hines had an outstanding finish to the 2002 season for the Patriot women, who completed the year at 10-11 overall, 7-2 and in second place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). A first-team All-CAA selection, Hines did not allow a goal as she played the first half in 8 of George Mason’s 9 conference regular-season games, a span of 360 minutes, and shared the team’s three shutouts in CAA play (four overall) with sophomore Sarah Coughlin, who earned All-CAA second-team honors. For the season, Hines posted a 1.33 goals-against average.
O’Hara, a first-team All-CAA selection after being the conference Rookie of the Year in 2001, was the defensive anchor for the George Mason men as they finished the season 8-7-4 overall, 3-4-2 and in seventh place in the CAA. The Patriots allowed just 21 goals in 19 games, their lowest total since 1990. O’Hara was ranked nationally for goals-against average for much of the season, topping out at No. 5 on Sept. 24. O’Hara posted seven full shutouts and shared another as he had a 1.05 GAA.
