The George Mason wrestling team travels to Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend for the prestigious Las Vegas Invitational. Competition begins Friday at noon and continues Saturday.
George Mason will send eight wrestlers to compete in the tournament, which has become one of the top early-season tournaments in collegiate wrestling as most of the top teams in the nation compete in the event. In most early-season tournaments, teams are allowed multiple entries per weight class, but at the Las Vegas Invitational, only one wrestler per weight class may be entered, giving it the feel of a conference or NCAA championship.
The eight Patriots traveling to Las Vegas are sophomore Aaron Suranofsky at 125 pounds, junior Rob Becker at 149, junior Sean Early at 157, senior Richard Appau at 165, sophomore P.J. Ross at 174, junior Nick Webster at 184, junior Tom Whiston at 197, and junior Sandy Ailor at heavyweight.
Becker (4-2) and Ross (3-2) each placed fourth at the East Stroudsburg Open on Nov. 23 in the first competition of the season for George Mason, while Suranofsky (2-2) and Early (3-2) each placed in the top eight.
