The George Mason women’s soccer team continued its outstanding late-season run with a 1-0 victory over Hofstra Friday in the semifinals of the 2002 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament in Virginia Beach, but James Madison put an end to the run and the Patriots’ season with a 2-0 victory in the championship game Sunday.
The No. 2 seed in the tournament after finishing the regular season with a 7-2 CAA mark, George Mason (10-11 overall) defeated third-seeded Hofstra on a late goal by freshman Danielle MacDonald. But the Patriots fell victim to a pair of opportunistic goals by James Madison Sunday as the Dukes claimed their second CAA championship. Senior goalkeeper Naomi Hines, senior defender Liz Sims, and junior midfielder Cara Patton were rewarded for their play over the weekend by being named to the all-tournament team.
