The George Mason men’s basketball team has been selected to finish second in the upcoming 2002-03 season, and senior forward Jesse Young has been named to the all-conference first team by a vote of media representatives at the annual Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Basketball Media Day, held at the Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk.

Young was the only Patriot player named to the first or second teams. University of North Carolina-Wilmington senior guard Brett Blizzard, who earned the 2001-02 CAA men’s basketball Player of the Year honor, was the top-vote getter in the preseason poll and was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.

The Patriots received three first-place votes and finished behind preseason favorite UNC-Wilmington, which received 20 first-place votes. Drexel collected two first-place votes and claimed third in the balloting, while Virginia Commonwealth was selected fourth, garnering one first-place vote. Delaware was picked to finish fifth, followed by James Madison, Hofstra, Old Dominion, Towson, and William and Mary.

George Mason’s second place selection matched the preseason voting done by the CAA’s 10 head coaches July 30. In that poll, UNC-Wilmington was also picked to repeat as champion, while Virginia Commonwealth and Drexel were expected to finish third and fourth, respectively.

The Patriots return four starters from last year’s team that went 19-10 and hosted a first round National Invitational Tournament contest, marking the team’s third post-season appearance in the last four years. Young, a co-captain this season and 2002 All-CAA first team choice, will lead the team along with senior co-captain and forward Jon Larranaga, a member of the 2002 CAA All-Defensive team. Young concluded the year ranked among the league’s top 10 in scoring, rebounds, field goal percentage, and blocked shots.
