On Oct. 15, President Alan Merten and School of Management Dean Richard Klimoski attended the Northern Chapter of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants monthly meeting and accepted a ceremonial check for $100,000 from the chapter for an endowed accounting professorship. Merten addressed the chapter on the topic “The Place of Higher Education in Economic Development.”

“The school hopes the state will match the endowment through the eminent scholars program to fund the professorship,” says accounting professor Phillip Buchanan, a member of the chapter. “Subject to funding, we hope to hire a person to fill the professorship for the 2003-04 academic year.”

The Northern Chapter will require the professor to be active with the chapter and present at least one pre-meeting forum each year. The chapter is considering continuing to raise funds for the professorship, and may also raise funds to endow a student scholarship or provide more generic support to George Mason.
