George Mason hosts its second annual family weekend today through Sunday with the theme “Great Families Make Mason.” The purpose of the weekend’s activities is to expand the opportunities for parent involvement within the university. Programs provide several opportunities for parents to meet other parents, faculty and staff members, and students. George Mason families will be given a close-up view of their students’ educational experiences.
Highlights of the weekend include an academic open house, a preview of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, and cultural events. Activities begin today with an early check-in from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Orientation Office in SUB I, Room 351. Then, families can exhibit their George Mason spirit by kicking off the basketball season with the first practice and festivities at Super Mason Midnight Madness in the Patriot Center, beginning at 10:30 p.m.
On Saturday morning, a continental breakfast is offered along with the chance to mingle with President Alan Merten and his wife, Sally, Provost Peter Stearns, and academic deans and directors in the Concert Hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. there will be an academic open house and spotlight demonstrations in several locations throughout the university. Later, student leaders show their appreciation for George Mason families by serving brunch from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra performs at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The event concludes Sunday with a three-mile walk at 8 a.m. and sporting events following in the afternoon.
