The seventh annual celebration of the opening of George Mason men’s and women’s basketball practices takes place tonight at the Patriot Center, and the event promises to be the biggest and best ever.
“U.S. Army Presents Super Mason Midnight Madness” begins at 10:30 p.m. when local band Brevity warms up the crowd until the start of the festivities at 11 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
While the Patriot basketball teams officially opened practice on Oct. 12, along with the rest of the nation, “Super Mason Midnight Madness” was scheduled for Oct. 18 due to George Mason students beginning fall break on Oct. 11. An impressive indoor fireworks display will welcome the men’s and women’s basketball players when they are introduced at midnight. The late-night session will end with brief scrimmages by both teams.
U.S. Army is the 2002 title sponsor of the event, which is an annual rite of fall on the Fairfax Campus. More than 3,000 fans are expected to attend the festivities, which feature pre-practice games for fans, events, and interactive competitions. This year’s “Superhero” theme promises to provide excitement and entertainment for all who attend. Among the preliminary events are Electrifying Magic by Lee Edwards Smith, Superhero Relay Race, Aquatic Center Faculty/Staff Elephant Race, George Mason Bookstore Who Wants To Win Books For A Year competition, and the Parking Services Reserved Spot Three-Point Shot Contest.
