The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has announced the appointment of Joan Isenberg as visiting scholar for higher education initiatives. In this role, Isenberg will consult with institutions of higher education to develop strategies and projects to incorporate the national board’s standards, assessments, and mission into teacher education and professional development programs.
Isenberg is taking a one-year leave of absence from her position as professor in the Graduate School of Education (GSE). During her 25-year tenure at George Mason she directed GSE’s advanced master’s degree program in teaching and learning, which is aligned with national board standards for practicing teachers, and also coordinated its early childhood professional development programs.
“It is an honor to be part of an organization that is committed to teacher quality and recognizes that institutions of higher education play an important role in revitalizing America’s education system,” says Isenberg. “I look forward to helping the national board link its work with these institutions for the continuing professional development of classroom teachers.”
