History was made at George Mason Stadium on Friday as the first night game in George Mason University soccer annals was played as a highlight of the annual George Mason/Comfort Inn/Kappa Soccer Classic.
James Madison met La Salle at 5 p.m. Friday before the historic event unfolded with the host Patriots beating Army 2-1. The tournament concluded Sunday with George Mason settling for a 1-1 tie with La Salle.
The Musco lighting system, installed over the summer, will enhance George Mason’s ability to draw larger crowds for its men’s and women’s soccer contests. The Patriot women play their first game under the lights on Friday, Sept. 13, as they face University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the George Mason Invitational.
“We are very excited to be the first George Mason soccer team to play under the lights at our stadium,” said Patriot head coach Fran O’Leary. “A great deal of credit for this night must go to our administration, especially Athletic Director Tom O’Connor. Our players eagerly anticipated our opening night under the bright lights.”
