Christine Amaya, administrative assistant in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, has been selected as the September Employee of the Month. Amaya has worked for the department since January 1997, and one faculty member calls the time before her arrival the “pre-Christine era,” for she has become indispensable.
Amaya’s peers and superiors describe her as efficient, thorough, patient, and cheerful. Her infectious energy and flair have won her praise and admiration from across the George Mason community.
In addition to her routine duties, including maintaining syllabi and ordering textbooks, Amaya has organized the department’s participation in Mason Spirit Days, which as been a rousing success. She maintains the hundreds of applications, references, and files of prospective department faculty. And, with deep appreciation from her department, she spearheads the effort of verifying each student’s eligibility to enroll in particular math classes.
Amaya helps guide parents and students through the process of taking the newly-implemented Mathematics Placement Exam, and her patience and attention have prompted several prospective students to mention that their interest in Mason was enhanced due to their dealings with her. “Sometimes students are upset or confused about their situation, but they leave the Math Office satisfied with the attention that they have received [from Christine],” notes department member Ellen O’Brien.
Robert Sachs, department chair, says that Amaya “frequently anticipates tasks needed before being asked about them,” maintaining her workload while responding to numerous phone calls, e-mails, and walk-ins, always with her signature cheery attitude. “I can’t imagine anyone doing this better,” Sachs says.
