The swimming and diving competition pool at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, located on the Fairfax Campus, has been named for the late James R. “Smilin Jim” McKay, founding owner of Jim McKay Chevrolet Inc. The Jim McKay Natatorium was officially dedicated during a ceremony held this week at the campus.

The naming of the natatorium recognizes McKay’s legacy of community service and involvement, as well as his longtime support of the university, according to President Alan Merten. McKay and his wife, Ruth, established a trust to fund major endowments for scholarships for disadvantaged students and student athletes, and to support aquatic programs at the Fairfax Campus.

“The McKays’ generosity has helped provide a strong foundation for the recently launched Campaign for George Mason University,” says Merten. “McKay enriched the lives of many through his commitment to this area, and we are honored to have his name associated with our Fairfax Campus.”

McKay, who died last year, founded his Fairfax car dealership in 1956. He served on the original board of directors for the National Bank of Fairfax and was an active member of the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Rotary and Optimist clubs.
