The men’s basketball team has been selected to finish second in the upcoming 2002-03 season, and senior forward Jesse Young has been named to the all-conference first team in a preseason poll of the Colonial Athletic Association’s (CAA) 10 head coaches.
Young was the only Patriot player named to the first or second teams. Senior forward Jon and sophomore guard Lamar Butler also received votes.
The Patriots received three first-place votes and finished five total points behind preseason favorite UNC-Wilmington, which received six first-place votes. Drexel, which received the other first-place vote, was fourth in the poll behind Virginia Commonwealth.
The Patriots return four starters from last year’s team that went 19-10 and hosted a first-round National Invitational Tournament contest, marking the team’s third postseason appearance in the last four years. Young, a 2002 all-CAA first team choice, and Larranaga, a member of the 2002 CAA all-defensive team, will lead this season’s squad. Butler, who started 18 of 29 games as a true freshman in 2001-02, was selected to the CAA all-Rookie team after recording 10.4 points per game and shooting .380 from three-point range.
