George Mason Initiates Temporary Hiring Freeze

As the economic condition of the commonwealth continues to decline, George Mason has placed a temporary hold on all employment hiring until Aug. 19, effective immediately. On that date, Gov. Mark Warner plans to announce information about further budget reductions for all state agencies, including higher education.
“We had hoped to be able to avoid such a hiring freeze action, but prudent financial management dictates that we avoid any long term employment commitments until the pending budget reduction announcement is made,” says Maurice Scherrens, senior vice president.
The university will honor all offers of employment that have been made prior to 5 p.m. Aug. 7. No new searches for positions, with a few exceptions, will be initiated.
