Jane Luxenberg, director of the Fairfax Small Business Development Center (FSBDC), part of the School of Public Policy’s Mason Enterprise Center, recently received the Small Business Advocate of the Year Award. The award, given by the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, recognized Luxenberg for her outstanding support of small businesses independently, through the FSBDC, and through the chamber’s activities.
Luxenberg began working with the FSBDC as a volunteer counselor/teacher in 1990. In the spring of 2001, after years of dedication to the plight of small businesses in this community, she became the director. “This award represents a stepping stone as we continue to develop our relationship with the business community,” she says.
One example of this relationship is Cryst Insurance, a small business located in the Enterprise Center that has been aided many times by the FSBDC. Linda Christ, president of Cryst Insurance and a member of the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, says, “I personally felt she was my advocate, with her help and the center’s services. So, as a member, when asked for nominees for the award, it was a no-brainer. Jane is dynamite.”
The Northern Virginia Small Business Development Center (NVSBDC) comprises four separate centers in Fairfax, Loudoun, South Fairfax, and Arlington. According to Luxenberg, each center offers assistance in four forms: one-on-one counseling, classes and training, a resource library, and the web site. In addition, NVSBDC rents businesses affordable office space within the Enterprise Center.
