Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore has announced the formation of an Advisory Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault that includes Connie Kirkland, coordinator of Sexual Assault Services. The advisory council is composed of domestic violence survivors and representatives from the General Assembly, criminal justice community, victim assistance organizations, the private sector, the health care community, and state colleges and universities.
The council will conduct a series of community forums throughout Virginia designed to increase awareness and understanding of domestic violence and sexual assault in the commonwealth. The council panel will highlight the needs of victims and survivors and gather information to help shape public policy in the future. A report on its findings will be submitted to Kilgore this fall.
“We have made progress in the fight against violence and abuse, but this fight is an ongoing one,” says Kilgore. “The work of this advisory council will help take us to the next level and hasten the day when domestic violence and sexual assault are no longer a part of life for citizens of Virginia.”
