The George Mason Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc.
Telephone comments will be accepted by the assessment team Monday, Aug. 12, from 1 to 5 p.m., at (703) 993-2812. Written comments may be sent to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc., 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 320, Fairfax, Va. 22030-2201.
As part of the voluntary process initiated by the department to gain reaccreditation, the assessment team will examine all aspects of the department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services. Accreditation is for three years.
According to university police Maj. Albert Oglesby, accreditation program manager, the assessment team comprises law enforcement practitioners from similar out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed. Once they complete their review, they report back to the commission, which will then decide if the department is to be granted accredited status.
The assessors are Peter Favreau, retired chief of police, Manchester, N.H., and Kevin Haywood, commander, University of Arizona Police Department.
