George Mason sophomore Brandon Simpson of the men’s track and field team false started in the finals of the 400 meters and was disqualified at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. NCAA rules disqualify an athlete from participation in the event after one false start.
Simpson entered the finals with the third-best qualifying time after running a personal-best 45.12 seconds to finish second in his preliminary heat. Earlier this season, Simpson won individual titles at both the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America Championships and at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships in the 400 meters. Additionally, Simpson was named the Outstanding Performer of the Meet at the CAA Championships after setting a meet record in the 400 meters.
The 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be shown on CBS at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 8.
