What makes a great supervisor? A half-cup of good communication, a quarter-cup of emotional intelligence, and two tablespoons of performance management? While there is no exact recipe for a great supervisor, the Supervisor Series class organized by Carol Henderson, staff development manager in Human Resources, seeks to give good workers the skills to be great supervisors.
In the most recent class, 16 participants met once a month for nine months. The subject matter ranged from exploring the differences and special skills required to be a good worker to creative simulations that helped students clearly see the structures, work relationships, and group dynamics common to most work lives.
During the course, the class read two books, attended eight joint class sessions, and completed a project benefiting the participants’ work areas.
This year’s participants and graduates, who will be recognized at a reception tomorrow with Tom Hennessey, chief of staff to the president, are Barbara Davis, Counseling Center; Mihaela Enache, Technical Systems, Database Application Services; Karen Gardner, LAN/Desktop Support Services; Mary Gray, School of Public Policy; Leni Gonzalez, Urban Alternative; Aaron Hayes, Information Services; Shai Kowitt, ITU Support Center; Denise Leming, School of Law; Ann Ludwick, Public and International Affairs; Michelle Nery, University Publications; Dana Chong Park, Psychology; Steve Pierson, Purchasing and Accounts Payable; Brenda Roberts, Admissions; Bekim Shala, Technical Systems, Database Application Services; Matthew Silverman, Classroom Technologies; and JoAnn Stevens, Office of the Executive Vice President.
Those who complete the course earn four continuing education units and are presented with a certificate at the final reception. The next series begins in the fall and runs throughout the academic year. Class size is limited to 28. To register, contact Carol Henderson at x32621 or email@example.com.
