Sophomore Brandon Simpson automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a personal-best time of 45.38 seconds to win the 400 meters at the Mason Invitational held earlier this month at George Mason Stadium.
Simpson’s performance ties the fifth-best performance in the 400 by a collegian this season. It also moves him into second place on George Mason’s all-time performers list behind three-time Olympic bronze medalist and former George Mason national champion Greg Haughton. Simpson and Haughton competed together on Jamaica’s 4×400-meter relay at last summer’s World Championships, where they won the bronze.
George Mason senior All-American Chris Stokes won the 110-meter hurdles in the NCAA provisionally qualifying time of 13.88 seconds. Senior Marion Mason finished second in the final in a personal-best 14.20 seconds.
Freshman Tysha Colon led the women’s team winning both the 100- and 200-meter dash in ECAC-qualifying times. She won the 100 in 11.96 seconds and the 200 in 24.69 seconds. The Patriots swept the top two places in the 100 and the top three in the 200. Junior NamTasha Joyner was runner-up in the 100 in 12.12 seconds, and placed third in the 200 in 25.02 seconds. Sophomore Ameca Williams was second in the 200 in 24.81 seconds.
