This weekend the Center for the Arts welcomes Yuri Grigorovich and his company, the Grigorovich Ballet. The troupe will perform Raymonda, based on motifs by Lydia Pashkova, with music by Alexander Glazunov, on Saturday at 8 p.m. Swan Lake is performed on Sunday at 2 p.m. An artistic discussion is scheduled for 45 minutes prior to each performance on the Concert Hall’s Grand Tier.
Raymonda, considered one of Glazunov’s best works, is based on a medieval legend of the rivalry between the noble knight Jean de Brienne and the perfidious Saracen sheik, Abderakhman, for the love of the young Raymonda.
Swan Lake, based on a German fairy tale, is in four acts and danced to the emotional score of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is the classic tale of the beautiful princess, Odette, turned into a swan by an evil magician and discovered by Prince Siegfried, who promises her undying devotion and rescue.
Tickets for each performance of the Grigorovich Ballet are $50, $42, and $25. Children under 12 are admitted for half price. Charge by phone at (703) 218-6500 or visit www.tickets.com.
