Ten different players scored for George Mason as the Patriots routed visiting Drexel 22-5 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at GMU Stadium. The Patriots earned their third straight victory and improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in CAA action.
It was a game of milestones for George Mason as the Patriots broke the school record for most goals scored in a game and for the largest margin of victory. The previous goals scored record was 21 versus American on March 28, 2000, and the previous largest margin of victory was 15 in a 20-5 win over the University of Maryland Baltimore County on March 26, 1998, and the 21-6 win over American.
Individually, junior attacker Jill Toomey set two honors in the contest–scoring her 100th career goal at George Mason and becoming the all-time Patriots’ leader in points with 134, surpassing Aimee Willard who had 132. Toomey finished the game with 5 goals and one assist for 6 points and is one of only two Mason players to score more than 100 career goals. Liz Paoli ended her career with 110 goals, while Toomey currently stands at 102.
“I had no idea that was coming,” said Toomey. “When those announcements were made, and I received a game ball, I was completely surprised. I never look at my stats because all I want is for the team to play well and win games, like we did today.”
