Junior Adrian Austin and sophomore Rob Becker each competed at the 2002 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y., last week and both won matches before being eliminated in the double-elimination tournament. The duo scored 2.5 team points to leave the Patriots tied for 58th in the team standings. It was the second trip to the national tournament for Austin, while Becker was making his first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Austin was 2-2 in the tournament to finish the season with an overall record of 24-12. On Thursday, he won his opening match over Slippery Rock’s Brad Cieleski, 8-1, to advance to a second-round meeting with top-seeded Mike Zadick of Iowa, who scored a 24-8 technical fall, dropping Austin into the consolation bracket. He defeated Stanford’s Matt Gentry, 6-3, on Friday, but lost to No. 9 seed Keaton Anderson of Ohio State, 2-1 in a tie-breaker.
Becker was 1-2 at the NCAA Championships to finish the year at 24-9. On Thursday, he dropped an 11-4 decision to Northwestern’s John Giacche, who is ranked 18th nationally by InterMat, in his opening match before defeating Brown’s Clinton Frease, 12-5, in the consolation first round.
Becker then lost by fall in 3:42 to Army’s Phillip Simpson, seeded 10th in the tournament.
