Two Wrestlers Qualify for NCAA Championships

The Patriots (4-8, 2-3 CAA) concluded their 2001-02 season by placing seventh at the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday at the James Madison University Convocation Center. Junior Adrian Austin, at 149 pounds, and sophomore Rob Becker, at 141, each placed second to earn a trip to the upcoming NCAA Championships.
Seeded No. 2, Austin (22-10) defeated Campbell’s Mike Wrinkle by fall in 4:38 in the quarterfinals Friday. He followed up on Saturday by defeateing No. 3 seed Joe Privitere of Binghamton, 6-3, before falling to top-seeded DeBruin in the finals, 21-5. Austin will make his second trip to the NCAA tournament.
Becker (23-7) earned his first trip to the national tournament with his second-place finish. He won his quarterfinal match with a 19-3 major decision over Binghamton’s Joe Gartiser on Friday, then scored another major decision Saturday with a 13-4 victory over No. 3 seed Mark Laramee of Boston University. In the championship match, Becker fell to top-seeded Jon Masa of Hofstra, 13-5.
With Austin and Becker advancing, the Patriots have had at least one wrestler qualify for the NCAA Championships in each of the last 17 seasons. The 2002 NCAA Championships are set for March 21-23 at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y.
