This will be the first time George Mason has hosted an NIT game, as its team played twice on the road in the 1986 tournament. The Patriots defeated Lamar, 65-63, before falling at Providence, 90-71. The NIT was expanded to 40 teams this year and is the oldest tournament in college basketball, dating back to 1938. The semifinals and finals are at Madison Square Garden.
The contest also marks the first time the Patriots will meet St. Joseph’s, ranked No. 10 in the preseason Associated Press poll, in men’s basketball. The Hawks are 18-11 overall and were 12-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, placing in a tie for first with Temple in the East Division. George Mason is 19-9 overall.
