Track and Field Teams Successful at ECAC/IC4A Championships

The men’s and women’s track and field teams had several outstanding performances at the ECAC/IC4A Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. The men’s team finished in the top five for the 13th time, placing 5th with 35 points; while the women’s team placed 11th with 23 points.

The men’s 4×400-meter relay of Brandon Simpson, Henry Harris, Chris Baker, and Kevin Nishiyama won the event with a meet record and NCAA provisionally qualifying time of 3:09.34, their second-best time of the season. Gareth Peters was also victorious for the men’s team, winning the 800 meters in a season-best time of 1:50.96.

LaToya Phillips led the women’s team with a runner-up finish in the long jump with an NCAA provisionally qualifying jump of 20 feet, 1 inch. Corri Allen and Kim Morgan placed 9th and 10th, respectively, in the long jump. Phillips also competed in the 60-meter hurdles, advancing to the semifinals where she placed 6th in her heat in 8.84 seconds.

Lauren Chesnut and All-American Allen Simms, who sat out last weekend to rest, are expected to represent the Patriots at this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Simms has automatically qualified in both the long and triple jumps, and currently ranks 3rd and 5th in the nation, respectively. Chesnut currently ranks 7th in the nation in the triple jump.
