Dorothy MacConkey, former assistant vice president for Academic Affairs and acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at George Mason, died last Wednesday. MacConkey joined George Mason in 1966 as a member of the sociology faculty. She went on to chair the Department of Sociology from 1973 to 1976. She was associate dean, then acting dean of CAS from 1976 to 1980.
MacConkey left George Mason for the position of vice president and dean at Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, and became president of Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, in 1985, retiring in 1998. She was West Virginia’s first female college president.
Vice President for Student Affairs Karen Rosenblum remembers MacConkey, known as Dottie, as “a wonderful, warm person with a good vision for the university. She was also excellent with students.” Chair of Sociology Joe Scimmeca concurs. “She was a very genuine, warm person, and always very helpful,” he says.
Funeral services are held today at the Christ Church Methodist Church, 8285 Glen Eagle Lane, Fairfax Station. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dorothy I. MacConkey Scholarship Fund, c/o West Springfield Rotary Club, P.O. Box 2097, Springfield, VA 22152.
