Merten Comments on State Budget Woes in Washington Post

An article on Virginia’s budget woes appeared in the Jan. 31 edition of the Washington Post quoting President Alan Merten as he discussed the university’s efforts to deal with the bleak prospects being imposed upon it and its sister institutions of higher learning.
To avert widespread layoffs and big boosts in class size, Merten said the state should relinquish its control over whether and by how much colleges and universities may raise tuition. “This is worse than an operating nightmare,” Merten says. “We are being asked to become tax collectors for the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are working on a bumper sticker that says, ‘Don’t Replace the Car Tax With a Brain Tax.'”
