Last fall the University Traditions Committee sponsored a competition to create music and lyrics for a George Mason alma mater. Contributions were sought from faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members. There are currently two finalists, with the winning song to be announced at the Homecoming 2002 men’s basketball game on Feb. 16.

Faculty, staff, and students have the opportunity to influence the judging by going to the alma mater web site, listening to the two songs, and offering input. The Traditions Committee will consider the comments before making a final decision on Feb. 6.

The alma mater will be chosen for its responsiveness to the diversity of George Mason’s student body, the ease with which it can be learned and sung, and lyrics that do not necessarily require musical accompaniment.

“The process has been great,” says Traci Claar, community relations coordinator and a Traditions Committee member. “There’s a lot of talent throughout the university and the surrounding community. We’re really looking forward to picking a finalist.”
