George Mason junior Jesse Young has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week for men’s basketball. It is the first such honor for Young in his career.
A 6-10, 245-pound forward from Peterborough, Ontario, Young scored 39 points (19.5 per game) and added 17 rebounds (8.5 per contest) as George Mason won a pair of home games last week to improve to 8-4 overall, 2-1 in the CAA.
Young narrowly missed completing his third straight double-double with 21 points and 9 rebounds in an 80-71 victory over William and Mary on Jan. 3. He added 18 points and 8 rebounds in a 71-42 defeat of Towson on Jan. 5. He shot .429 (12-28) from the field and .789 (15-19) from the free throw line in the two contests.
A preseason All-CAA selection, Young has played like an all-star over the past two weeks. In his last four games, he has scored 74 points (18.5 ppg) and pulled down 43 rebounds (10.8 rpg) while shooting .848 (28-33) from the free throw line.
