Former Professor Named University President

Shirley Raines, former associate professor of education at George Mason and recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award, was recently named the 11th president of The University of Memphis.
She was most recently the vice chancellor of academic services and dean of the College of Education at the University of Kentucky.
Raines is the first woman to hold the presidency of the university, which was founded in 1912, as well as the first woman president of a major public university in the mid-South.
She is a recognized leader in early childhood education and curriculum, and has been the author or coauthor of 11 books and several journal articles. Raines is best known for working with legislators on issues concerning higher education, literacy, and community initiatives.
