George Mason sophomore defenders Keith Nakai and Hugh VanWagenen have been selected to the Virginia Division I All-State men’s soccer second team in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
It is the first such honor for each player. Nakai also was selected to the All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) second team.
Nakai and VanWagenen were anchors in the Patriot defense all season as the team’s central defenders in a four-back set. Along with freshman goalkeeper John O’Hara, who was the CAA Rookie of the Year, Nakai VanWagenen were keys to George Mason’s strong play over its last 10 games, in which the Patriots posted a 6-3-1 record and four shutouts.
VanWagenen, who moved to defense after playing in the midfield last year, contributed one assist this season to lift his career totals to one goal and four assists for six points, while Nakai has one goal for his career.
